NOTES FOR NEWCOMERS TO PAD
The functions in PAD are fairly self-evident, but a few operations can be
tricky till you get used to the program, mainly those concerning the
grayscale option for fills and shadows.
GRAYSCALE FILLING
You must go to the "Graphic Parameters" selector (a subsection of the menu
item "Parameters") in order to switch between muster (patterned) fill mode
and grayscale fill mode.
When using the grayscale fill, at first it turns the area plain black; you
must then right-click on the blackened area to turn it gray.
You can "muster" fill a black area on the drawing but you cannot grayscale
a black area directly. Sometimes if you do try to put grayscale into a
black area the program seems to lock-up but then clears - but occasionally
it bombs instead! One way round the problem of wanting to change a black
area to grayscale is to go to menu option "effects" and invert the page.
The black area is now white and can be grayscale-filled; but because
everything is reversed, you must first go to the "grayscale" selector and
temporarily reverse the direction (to exact opposite of whatever it is set
at) of the graduated fill. Now fill the area; and go back to "effects" to
invert the page again. The drawing will be back to normal with the new
grayscale's graduation running in the correct direction. Don't forget to
then change the grayscale selector back to its original setting.
Though UNDO will clear a muster-fill when you are on the work-page, you
have to go right-click back to the menu before the same command will work
on a grayscaled fill.
Remember to do it before you click on any other function.
You can produce attractive blending by putting a muster-fill onto the
paler end of a graduated grayscale, before it has become a solid gray; or
a grayscale onto a sparsely-pixelled area of muster-fill.
OTHER NOTES
By pressing the left mouse button while on the drawing page (ie. without
the menu) you can scroll up and down the "roll" of numbered PAD pages.
The intensity of the drawing function "Rays" is affected by the speed of
mouse movement; slower gives a denser pattern.
When the graphic-parameter is set to grayscale, the brush and spraycan
functions still operate with the last muster-fill you selected. The line
drawing function is, however, black (or optionally white).
If drawing with a thick freehand line, go slowly to avoid ragged edges.
If you are not used to Signum fonts, you may not realise that these fonts
come in German and UK/American keyboard layouts. When your font and your
keyboard are not the same nationality, the characters outwith the basic
alphabet tend to be under the "wrong" keys, or not available. Where the
basic alphabet is concerned, it is just a matter of typing "Zz" for "Yy",
and vice-versa. You can change the nationality of Signum fonts by using
the ST Club's "Fontkit" font-editing package.
Hope this is some help to beginners .............
